Brett's title joy

BRETT FLOURNEY (left) became Brompton Boxing Club's first champion when he won the National Novice Championship in Nottingley on Saturday.

Flourney, an electrician with the Royal Engineers, put in the performance of his career to beat Z Hassian (Bradford Police) 13-7 on computer scoring in the 67kg division.

It comes as a boost to the fledgling club who are looking to become big players on the local scene.

Flourney knew he had his work cut out in the first round as Hassian came on strong but he still edged it 5-4.

The 23-year-old started to use his skills more in the second and picked his man off as he charged at him but had to take a couple of shots himself.

In the last round, Hassian looked to knock Flourney out but was picked off with 1-2 combinations and Flourney lifted the crown.

• St Mary's fighter Jason Bosquet had his Under-54kg final cancelled as he didn't have an opponent.
