Financial constraints mean Gillingham will have to off-load some players this week before they can recruit.

A number of players have been offered for loan but so far things have been quiet on that front although Gillingham assistant manager Scott Barrett doesn’t believes that will be the case for long.

“The manager’s phone will be red hot this week,” said Barrett.

“As with anything it’s about getting the timing right. We’re always looking to bring in the right players if finances allow.

“In the past we’ve had to make a little bit of space in the squad to bring players in and so that’s what will happen.

“We’ll have to carry on wheeling and dealing and hopefully buy wisely.

“Gillingham’s historical position is that it’s not flushed with money so we’ve got to balance the books and do that wisely. Also, we have to look to bring in players who will improve the team.”

Stuart Lewis and Nicky Southall head the list of players the management want to ship out on loan but a number of youngsters are also being made available.

Gillingham’s main priority will be a left winger and a striker but they’ll have to act fast as the window for permanent deals shuts on September 1.
