Invicta East Kent AC star Rebecca Weston suffered heartache in the European Junior Championships final in Rieti, Italy, missing out on a medal in the 5,000m by just over a second.

The Canterbury star, 18, led from the start until well into the final kilometre but was overhauled by eventual winner Jip Vastenburg with just over a lap to go.

Weston eventually finished fourth in 16.09.90 - nearly six seconds behind the winner, from the Netherlands, who pipped Finn Oona Kettunen in a photo.

Russian Elena Kudashkina claimed bronze in 16.08.12.
Weston’s training partner, 17-year-old Alex Clay from Wingham finished eighth in 16.41.
