Arsenal 1 - Gillingham 0

GILLS find themselves with a mountain to climb after falling behind to a Sylvain Wiltord goal seven minutes from the break.

Gills were under pressure as early as the fifth minute when Vince Batram produced a good save from Kanu's fierce shot and the defence cleared the loose ball.

Iffy Onuora had Gills' first shot on goal in the eighth minute before Edu missed a great chance firing over the bar from close range.

In the 23rd minute, Wiltord rattled the Gillingham cross bar with a wonderful left-foot curler but Edu dragged the rebound over the bar when he should done better.

And it was the Brazilian who went close minutes later when he hit the bar with a fabulous 25-yard drive with Bartram stranded.

Marlon King dragged his shot well wide before the Gunners took the lead in the 38th minute.

Gills were enjoying a spell of pressure when the ball broke to Patrick Vieira who drove forward and slid the ball left to Francis Jeffers.

His shot was well saved by Bartram but the ball fell to Wiltord and he poked the ball into an empty net.
