ANDY HESSENTHALER took the unprecedented step of issuing a public apology to all Gillingham supporters following the team’s 6-0 humiliation by Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

The Gills boss was white-faced and crestfallen as he attempted the explain his team’s annihilation on the worst day of his managerial career.

Had Wolves not eased up after their sixth goal, Gillingham would, most certainly, have suffered a double-figure defeat. By that time many Gills fans had walked out in protest.

Hessenthaler: “I would like to apologise to our supporters who spent hard-earned money coming to watch us. They deserve better than that and we’re all very sorry.

“There are no excuses because we were awful. I’m shell-shocked because in the seven years I’ve been at the club I’ve never known a day like this. What you saw out there wasn't Gillingham. At one stage I thought it was going to be double figures

“I can't put my finger on what happened. If I could our supporters can rest assured that I would have done something about. Our fans are hurt and so are the players and the management team.

"What goes on in the dressing room is private but there are players in there who are hurting real bad because we know we can do a lot better than that."
