CHARLTON’S board of directors are to foot the bill for fans making the 600-mile round trip to support the team for this month’s re-arranged match at Newcastle on Wednesday, February 22.

Fans were left fuming when the match, originally scheduled for December 28, was called off less than 20 minutes before kick off because snow and ice outside of St James’ Park had made conditions unsafe.

Richard Murray, chairman of Charlton plc, said: “I am conscious that many of our supporters suffered an horrendous journey and some were unable to get home the same night.

“In these circumstances I believe the club has a responsibility to assist its supporters with the cost of a second visit to Newcastle. For that reason I and my fellow directors have agreed that we should underwrite this trip.”

The entire exercise is being co-ordinated by Maidstone based fans’ director Sue Townsend. To claim their free coach place, supporters should call her on 01732 521691 between 3 and 8pm only and must quote the seat number on their Newcastle match ticket.

The coach will pick up fans at the following points and times: Ashford (9am), Canterbury (9.30am), Faversham (9.40am), Medway (10am), Gravesend (10.30am), Maidstone (11am), Well Hall (11.15am), Bexleyheath (11.30am), Dartford (11.45am).
