CHARLTON want Chris Powell as the third member of new boss Les Reed’s backroom team.

The 37-year-old former England left-back is negotiating with Watford to secure his release from a one-year contract.

Powell could be back at The Valley for a third spell by the weekend.

Reed, meanwhile, has told players he will shed his "nice guy" image to bring about the desired effect needed for Charlton to climb the table.

"If I’m perceived as a nice guy, that’s up to other people," he said. "But I can be as mean as the next manager."

Deeply disappointed by the response to his managerial debut following the 2-0 defeat at Reading, he gave an honest and forthright assessment.

"I want commitment, not excuses," he added.
