Charlton Athletic 3 Newcastle United 1

CHARLTON were comfortable winners against Newcastle at The Valley on Sunday.

The home side were in front after 23 minutes when Darren Bent beat Shay Given from the penalty spot after Craig Moore had brought down Jerome Thomas in the box.

Newcastle were level 11 minutes later when former Addick Scott Parker drilled a superb long-range effort into the top corner of Thomas Myhre’s net.

But Charlton were ahead again within two minutes when Moore, in attempting to clear his lines, hammered the ball straight at team-mate Lee Bowyer and it rebounded back into his own net.

The points were wrapped up two minutes from time when substitute Jay Bothroyd headed home Dennis Rommedahl’s cross from close range.

Charlton have now lost just once in their last eight matches.

Charlton: Myhre, Young, Perry, Hreidarsson, Powell, Kishishev, Hughes, Holland, Thomas (Rommedahl 76), M Bent (Bothroyd 88), D Bent.
Subs Not Used: Andersen, Spector, Euell.
Attendance: 27,019.
