Charlton Athletic 2 - 0 Birmingham City

GOALS from Bryan Hughes and Darren Bent gave Charlton only their second win in 10 matches against Birmingham City at The Valley on Saturday.

The opening goal came just before the half hour mark when Hughes rose well to nod in Dennis Rommedahl's right-wing corner.

The goal was slightly against the run of play. New signing Chris Sutton was fitting into the Birmingham side well and Jiri Jarosik and Emile Heskey both went close in the first 25 minutes.

The visitors continued to create chances in the second half and Thomas Myhre was forced to make two close range saves from Heskey.

But Charlton made certain of the victory in stoppage time when Bent was played in by Hughes and he outpaced Mario Melchiot before clipping the ball over the onrushing Maik Taylor.

Charlton: Myhre, Young, Fortune, Hreidarsson, Powell, Rommedahl (Ambrose 72), Kishishev (Lisbie 82), Holland, Hughes, Bartlett, Bent.
Subs Not Used: Kiely, Perry, Spector.
