A 21-year-old man has died following a road crash.

The accident happened in Ashford Road, Harrietsham, on Sunday at about 7.30pm. Only one vehicle was involved and firefighters said it appeared the driver lost control on a bend as he travelled towards Ashford, leaving the carriageway and smashing into a tree.

Firefighters from Maidstone, Charing and Lenham attended the scene but they said the driver died shortly after the impact.

Police closed the road and carried out an initial investigation of the scene before the firefighters were allowed to pull the Ford Focus away from the tree.

One rescue worker who was at the scene said: "It was another accident that didn’t need to happen."
