A man walked into a fire station because his new ring was stuck on his finger - but firefighters had to go to B&Q.

The 20-year-old was given the ring by his girlfriend's parents just last week, but it got jammed when his finger became swollen.

He walked into Strood station after previously going to Medway Maritime Hospital for help last night.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Nurses at hospital had advised him to come to us so we could cut it off for him.

"We do have a specialist ring cutter but it is designed to cut gold and silver, not stainless steel and after about an hour-and-a-half, we still couldn't get the ring off."

One of the crew members went to B&Q to borrow a Dremel cutting tool to remove the ring.

The spokesman added: "Once we'd got that it only took about 10 minutes to get the ring off, he was very grateful, he took it with him."
