Woman killed in motorway smash

A man injured in a crash in which a woman died is said to be improving.

A woman driver died at the scene of a two-car crash on a Kent motorway which left her male passenger fighting for his life.

The crash happened on the coastbound carriageway of the M20 at Harrietsham, between junction 8 (Leeds Castle) and junction 9 (Ashford) at around 2.45am Sunday.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and her passenger was taken to hospital with injuries which were initially said to be life-threatening.

But today, his condition has improved.

A second man suffered less serious injuries.

It is thought the woman's car struck the central reservation and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction.

The incident caused severe traffic problems and motorists were urged to find alternative routes on the A20 or M2 while Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation team examined the scene.

The road was closed for several hours.
