AN ELDERLY woman was airlifted to hospital today after her car crashed into a traffic island.

The accident happened when the vehicle, a blue Vauxhall Astra, hit the island, rolled over and landed on its side on Sundridge Hill at Cuxton, near Rochester.

No other vehicle was involved in the crash, which occurred at about 2pm. Other motorists stopped to help the injured woman, who is though to be from the Medway area.

The emergency services were called to the scene and firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to cut off the roof to free the woman.

Paramedics called in the Kent Air Ambulance as it was thought the crash victim might have suffered back injuries.
