A woman has died after collapsing at a Rainham swimming pool while watching a young boy's lesson.

She was taken ill at Splashes Leisure Centre, in Bloors Lane, at about 6.30pm on Monday. The woman, in her 50s, later died.

She was with a boy aged about six, who is believed to have been taking part in the Junior Fins swimming class for children aged six to 10.

The leisure centre is run by Medway Council.

A spokesman said: "We can confirm that a woman in the spectator area of the swimming pool at Splashes Leisure Centre collapsed while watching swimming lessons on Monday evening.

"Staff attempted to resuscitate the woman and the ambulance service was called. Sadly, the woman later died.

"As is normal procedure, the council has reported this matter to the Health and Safety Executive."

It is unclear whether the woman and the boy were related.

A Health and Safety Executive spokesman said an investigation into her death had been opened but could not give further details.
