A WOMAN has been charged with murdering her husband who died from multiple axe wounds.

Wadanahalugeder Chandrasekera, 58, from Port Close, Bearsted, near Maidstone, was charged with the murder of Sarath Chandrasekera, 57, on Tuesday night.

A 23-year old man, also questioned by police, was released without charge.

Police were called to the home the couple shared for more than 15 years after receiving a call from Kent Ambulance Service at 9.30pm on Saturday, October 22.

Mr Chandrasekera, who neighbours say worked for the highways department at Kent County Council, died of multiple injuries at Maidstone Hospital the next day.

Chandrasekera, a former health worker, made her first appearance at Maidstone Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

She was granted conditional bail by magistrates but remanded in custody until a Crown Court judge heard a prosecution appeal on Friday. That appeal was successful.
