A wondergoal from Loui Fazackerley two minutes from time handed Welling a hard-fought Blue Square Bet South win over Maidenhead on Saturday.

The Wings looked to be heading for a frustrating draw but Fazackerley produced one moment of inspiration which was out of place in a game lacking in quality.

Dragged down to Maidenhead's level, Welling never got their usual flowing football going and the visitors should have led inside the first 20 minutes.

Marcus Rose headed over unchallenged from a corner, debutant Wings keeper John Whitehouse turned over Cliff Akurang's header and Marcell Powell's shot was deflected wide.

Andy Pugh sliced Welling's only chance wide until they took the lead in the 29th minute. Pugh pressured keeper Steve Williams and his clearance went straight to Luis Cumbers (pictured) who, 30 yards from goal, sent the ball sailing back over Williams' head and into the far corner.

Jamie Coyle's effort two minutes into the second half was ruled out for offside and Akurang headed wide at the other end.

Maidenhead levelled on 63 minutes when Alex Wall fired home from inside the area.

Wall was a constant threat but, like so many of his team-mates, he failed to make the most of his own ability, opting instead to focus too hard on trying to influence the officials than his own game. Maidenhead's lack of discipline even led to their manager instructing his players midway through the second half that any more cautions for dissent would lead to a fine of one week's wages.

That instruction seemed to focus Maidenhead's minds and there appeared only one winner in the closing stages until Fazackerley strode forward and cut inside before unleashing a shot that had too much power for Williams to cope with.

o Bromley slipped to seventh, two points behind Welling, and having played a game more, after a goalless draw at Dorchester on Saturday.
