Welling manager Andy Ford will bring his squad in three times next week in a bid to be ready for the new campaign.

The Wings have stuttered in pre-season after a number of injuries and absentees and Ford is determined to be ready for their Blue Square South clash with Woking on August 8.

They host Tonbridge in their final pre-season match on Sunday before training three times before the first league match.

"We've got a lot of work to do and we're not there yet," said Ford. "We haven't done anything yet - no set pieces, no shape, no shooting so we're running out of time.

"We're going to come in on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. I had to bring them in so we could get it all done and the players have agreed to the extra session.

"We need to make sure there are rights but there are also plenty of positives already, and I can see them."

Ford also reflected on the absence of striker James Lawson, who has been ruled out for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

"Obviously we've got a problem as he is contracted so that's dead money now, said Ford. "It's my worst nightmare and I've got to get a replacement.

"James is quick and big, he would have been a 20-goal man this season, without question.

"We watched a player on Tuesday night but I can't rush into it, I need to be patient."

Ford completed the signing of Jeff Minton, the former Chelmsford midfielder, who has also been named club captain. The Wings have also agreed deals with Jake Hobbs and centre-back Steve King.
