Welling 0 Newport 2

Welling's Blue Square South campaign ended on a low note after they were beaten by Newport on Saturday.

The Wings - who came into the game on the back of four successive clean sheets and three straight wins - never reached those heights against an ordinary Newport outfit.

The home side's best chance came on three minutes when Loui Fazackerly's right-wing corner was met by Tony Sinclair, but his effort was somehow cleared off the line by the visitors.

Thereafter, Welling keeper David Wilkinson ensured the scores remained blank until half-time as he twice denied Danny Rose before Paul Cochlin wasted two simple chances.

Newport took the lead in the 61st minute when striker Sam Foley scored from close range.

Welling should have levelled 12 minutes later when a clearance fell for Charlie Sheringham but he blazed wide with just the keeper to beat.

Foley ensured the visiting fans went home happy by adding a second 11 minutes from time - and Newport bizarrely celebrated as though they had won the play-offs despite them actually finishing three places and nine points below Welling in the final table.
