Delighted Welling manager Jamie Day has completed a major transfer coup by snapping up exciting winger Loick Pires.

The 20-year-old has been a long-term target for Day since he was released by Leyton Orient at the end of last season.

After a patient three-month wait, Day has agreed terms with Pires, who will put pen to paper on Tuesday morning.

Day said: "Loick was released by Leyton Orient and can play up front or on the left wing.

"I've been chasing him all summer so I'm really pleased to get him on board."

Day's interest in Gillingham pair Andy Pugh and Luis Cumbers was well known but he kept his desire to bring Pires to Park View Road low-key.

Pires is expected to feature in Tuesday night's friendly at home to Millwall and then against an Arsenal XI on Saturday.

He bolsters Day's attacking options with Loui Fazackerley, Joe Healy and Luis Cumbers also options to play in wide positions. The Wings boss is still waiting to hear on James Lawson's future as the striker - who has been out of action for a year - is stalling on Welling's current offer.

However, with interest from AFC Hornchurch, Lawson's choice appears to be between staying loyal and proving his fitness to the Wings who honoured his contract last season despite him being injured for the whole campaign or moving down a level to the Ryman League Premier Division.
