We deserved to have won, says Gillingham goalkeeper Alan Julian

Goalkeeper Alan Julian felt Gillingham deserved maximum points against Walsall after barely being troubled by the hosts.

An early double save from Julian kept Walsall out and they had little more to offer.

He said: "We were in control of the game, the boys played well and we were unlucky not to get the win. Our performance deserved it.

"There wasn’t a lot more we could have done other than sticking the ball in the back of the net. In terms of our performance it was up there but we weren’t beaten so that’s a positive.

"I was buzzing after the clean sheet. I grabbed hold of Darren (Dennehy) and Josh (Gowling) after the Colchester game because we hadn’t got a clean sheet for a while and I said ‘that’s it now, we are going to stay solid and we need to make sure we are on it.’

"Last week we were solid at Hartlepool and unlucky not to get a win. On Saturday we were unlucky again but a clean sheet was a big plus.

"If we keep building and confidence builds we’ll get a win before long."

With fellow keeper Simon Royce nearing full fitness after recovering from injury Julian will face some tough competition soon.

He’s not concerned though and is just focusing on trying to do his best.

"This run of games has been nice because the longest I’ve ever played is four games and I feel a lot more like myself again," said Julian.

"Sometimes I rant and rave and do things that make people laugh but that’s the way I am. I definitely feel more like myself and I’m confident.

"If you want to get on in the game you have to perform and it could be Peter Schmeichel behind me, it doesn’t matter, I have to do what I have to do."
