Wartime mine finally detonated

A CONTROLLED explosion has been carried out on a wartime mine discovered off the Kent coast.

The 1500lb device was trawled up a mile off Margate's seashore on Wednesday by the same fisherman who netted a similar mine three weeks ago.

The Dover coastguard said the device was successfully detonated on the seabed on Saturday afternoon.

Attempts to explode the bomb on Thursday and Friday failed. The mine was temporarily lost but later found on Friday.
