Hundreds of Kent students protesting against tuition fee rises have gone to London today where violence has kicked off.

Around 800 students went from Kent, including 500 from the University of Kent, with others attending from Canterbury College and Canterbury Christchurch.

Protesters have smashed windows and entered Millbank Tower in Central London. It is not known whether students from Kent were involved.

Speaking before the protests, Lauren Crowley, Vice-President (Education) for Kent Union, said: "We're demonstrating to show parliament that it's not on and that students aren't willing to stand by and accept it.

"The last rally that we ran of this size, we were three MP votes off winning on tuition fees, so we really believe it is something that we can achieve."

She said they were sending a message to the Lib Dems, in particular: "Students are high voters of the Liberal Democrats and a lot of students are angry that they were promised something that's not going to be delivered.

"We see Nick Clegg as a traitor, because he specifically promised - there are videos and photos of him signing the NUS pledge - that he would vote against tuition fees.

"And he's gone completely against that and a lot of students are very angry that he betrayed them."
