Village of Chislet sealed off in police incident

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

Two people have been arrested after
armed police were called to a village near
Herne Bay today.

A 48-year-old man and 44-year-old
woman were held in custody on suspicion of assault,
possession of a firearm and cultivation of cannabis.

Both suspects have now been released on
bail.

Police had originally been called to
the village of Chislet at 11.15am following reports a man
had been attacked.

Ten armed response officers, three dog
handlers and trained negotiators went to the scene.

Ch Insp Martin Cunningham said: "Our response was due to the
initial call indicating a firearm had been seen. Inquiries are now
continuing in the area."

A 24-year-old man has been treated for head injuries, but they
are not believed to be serious.

Fourteen cannabis plants have also been found at a
property in Hollow Lane. Officers had stood down from the
scene at 2.45pm.

The Kent Police helicopter was also
spotted flying above the village earlier in the day. Chislet Court
Farm and Church Lane were also sealed off to the public
and traffic.

Staff at nearby Marshide Nursery
School were advised by police to keep children inside at the
end of the school day at 1pm. Parents were later allowed
to collect their children once the area had been deemed safe.

The village primary school in
Church Lane was unaffected and continued its school day as
normal.

Ch Insp Martin Cunningham said:
"Our main concern around 1pm was for the safety of the children and
their parents.

"I would like to thank them all for
their patience and co-operation."

Lewis Jenkins, who runs
vegetable business Nethergong Nurseries in nearby Upstreet,
spotted several police cars and officers outside the village
shop during his lunch break.

He said: "It looked like police had
set up some sort of armed response unit down there.

"We're just outside Chislet here,
but a lady who works with my mother in the village lives next
door to where police set up their briefing area."

More reaction and pictures in this week's Kentish and
Herne Bay Gazette, out Wednesday.
