TREES shading the war graves of Kent cemetery have been hit by vandals.

Thanet Council is appealing for information after a holly and a pine tree were cut down in Ramsgate Cemetery and dragged away to a nearby site.

The holly tree was attacked just after Christmas, while it is thought the pine tree was cut down sometime on either January 17 or 18.

Both trees, both between six and eight feet tall, were planted by officers from Thanet Council around five years ago in the war grave section of the cemetery.

Cllr. Shirley Tomlinson, Cabinet Member for Commercial and Environmental Services, said: "This sort of vandalism is unacceptable anywhere in Thanet, but it's especially appalling when it happens in a cemetery.

“These trees had been planted by our own tree officers and were intended for the next generation to enjoy.

“It's particularly frustrating that they were just beginning to establish themselves at the time they were attacked.

“I would urge anyone with any information about who is behind this mindless vandalism to come forward."

If anyone has any information on the vandalism, contact the Parks department at Thanet District Council on 01843 577530.
