Van owners warned to store tools safely

TRADESMEN and labourers are being advised by police to empty their vans over night or risk losing their equipment.

Last weekend 11 vans were targeted across Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs with thousands of pounds worth of tools going missing.

Detectives say the thieves have a vehicle enabling them to shift these heavy and cumbersome items and are scouting for easy pickings in commercial vans that are either sign written to advertise their wares, or documents have been left in the cab advertising what the vehicle is used for.

Det Con Keith Taylor, whomis investigating the incidents, said although it was a bind to have to empty vans overnight, it would ensure workers still have their tools in the morning.

He added: “Either that or the vehicles must be kept locked and well secured.

“We would like to hear from anyone who knows who is committing these crimes, or anyone who has been offered cheap tools. Chances are they are stolen and that information could help us track the thieves.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det Con Taylor on 01843 222038 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously and free on 0800 555111.
