With nine days between our last match at Bury and our next game against Sheffield Wednesday, it’s a good time to take stock of the start we have made to 2011/12.

We’re unbeaten, having taken 13 points out of the 15 so far available, and we also had a good cup win against Reading, so things are going well. There’s no question we’d have taken that before the start of the season.

But it’s only the start.

We’re in an automatic promotion place in the league at the moment, but the only thing that matters is where we finish the season.

Of course, promotion is our overriding aim, but we believe we can win the league. We feel we have got the players and the squad capable of doing so.

We made 11 changes last midweek and beat Reading in the Carling Cup, so there are players itching to get in the side, and we feel we’re well equipped to be at the top at the end of May.

I think that was shown last Saturday against Bury.

We didn’t play very well in the first half and Bury deserved their lead at half-time. For long periods of the game, they were probably the better side. But for 20 or 25 minutes of the second half we were well on top, and we managed to score two good goals.

There are going to be times when you don’t get the result you deserve. The previous weekend, we felt we should have won against Scunthorpe United and only drew, so you take them as they come.

But the important thing is that we are going into every game believing that we can win, and that’s the approach we want to maintain throughout the season.

I got my third goal of the season on Saturday, and I’m certainly pleased with my own contribution. It took me eight games to get under way last season (although I did start the campaign at left-back), and if I can match or better my final tally of 14 goals, I will be pleased.

I also missed a chunk of last season through injury, so the aim is to stay fit and stay in the side. We’re creating a lot of chances and I’ve managed to get on the end of a few.

Sheffield Wednesday are up next on the television on Monday night. We’re expecting them to be one of our rivals at the top end of the table, so it would be nice to put a marker down against one of the big sides in the division.
