Unfazed by success

From the pubs of Camden to the dizzy heights of the US, it is manic for N-Dubz and they want you to know how well it’s going. Chris Price talks to member Fazer.

They have signed to one of America’s biggest hip-hop labels and had three hit albums since 2008 so do not expect N-Dubz to be all humble about it.

The Camden threesome have come a long way since they burst on the scene with a Best Newcomer Award at the MOBOs back in 2007.

Their days performing in schools and on pirate radio stations are well and truly gone thanks to platinum-selling albums Uncle B and Against All Odds.

Now they have been signed by US record company Def Jam and are launching their bid to crack the States with their third record Love.Live.Life.

So a little bit of blowing their own trumpet can surely be forgiven.

“People always say it might be a bad thing to talk about what I do but imagine coming from nothing and creating a career for yourself,” said Fazer, real name Richard Rawson, the only non-family member of the trio which includes cousins Dappy and Tulisa, real names Dino Contostavlos and Tula Contostavlos.

“You are proud of that. You are not boasting by mentioning it. We got signed by Def Jam. It’s a big thing. Us talking about it is just our way of saying 'Oh my God, I cannot believe it!’”

No one can fault N-Dubz’s work ethic. Fazer admitted the band wanted to strike while the iron was hot with Against All Odds after the success of Uncle B.

The group then filmed a six part documentary, Being... N-Dubz, to capitalise on their swelling fanbase.

The band kick off their Love.Live.Life tour in Margate this week and they return to Kent at the Rochester Castle Concerts in July.

Fazer said: “When you are out of sight, you are out of mind. Someone will always come and take your position. The more you are off TV the more people will forget about you.

“We weren’t going to do an album last year. We were going to repack Against All Odds but because we were writing so many great songs we thought why do a remix when you can do a new album. So we made Love.Live.Life.”

He added: “I did enjoy doing the documentary. We had a laugh with it, going to Greece. We are doing another one about our American campaign. It will show how we signed to Def Jam and which songs took off out there.”

America is notoriously a tough nut to crack but the trio feel positive. They have major label backing for their assault across the Atlantic, rather than having to garner support for themselves as they did when they started out in the UK.

“It is like going from primary school where you are the oldest, to secondary school where you are the youngest,” said Fazer. “But we are not scared at all about changing things. We are N-Dubz and we are 100 per cent in control of what we do. It is all in-house.”

N-Dubz bring their Love.Live.Life tour to Margate Winter Gardens on Tuesday, April 12. They return to Kent for the Rochester Castle Concerts on Friday, July 15.
