AN award-wining children’s road safety charity is to auction the right to be the first person to abseil off a submarine in the UK.

On Friday, July 28 at 10.30am an online auction goes live with the top bidder winning the right to start a charity abseil off from HMS Ocelot, the Cold War submarine, currently in dry dock at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent.

This unique experience has been dreamed up by the KM Walking Bus Project as a fund-raising scheme to support its expansion in Kent.

Currently 60 Walking Buses operate in the county with an extra 20 schemes due to be launched over the coming 12 months. In the first six months of this year 30,000 school run car journeys were taken off Kent’s streets by the operation of Walking Buses.

The Walking Bus Project will be the main beneficiary of the proceeds with the Medway Cerebral Palsy Unit receiving 20 per cent of the charity pot.

Event organisers are appealing for 90 brave souls to take part in the abseil event which will take place on Sunday, August 13.

This is believed to be the first time an abseil has been attempted off a submarine in Britain.

To take part, download the entry form on this page and pledge to raise a minimum of £75 in sponsorship. You will be sent an abseil pack giving full details of the event.

The top 20 fund-raisers will be invited to abseil from the tower, the highest point of the sub, with the winner of the online auction being the first person to abseil at 9am.

The majority of the participants will abseil from the deck of the sub into the dry dock.

For information on the charity abseil, call Simon Dolby on 07989 164 752.
