Staff, students, governors and the Hartsdown Technology College have paid tribute to “our Charlie” – Charles Young who has died, aged 96.

Mr Young was a college governor for 26 years and served as vice-chairman for many years.

He only relinquished the post last September when he was made the college’s first ever president in a mark of respect for his service to Hartsdown and the community.

Mr Young had served as a Labour Party member for 82 years. He was Mayor of Margate three times and a former chairman of Thanet council.

College principal Andy Somers said: “He was always forthright in his views, putting the needs of the students above all else.

“He was one of the longest serving school governors in Kent and probably the country, and had worked at the college for over a quarter of a century.

“Last year the governors made Charlie the honorary president to reflect the huge debt of gratitude that they and the whole college owe him.

“Charlie was a real charmer and will be missed for his friendship as well as his expertise, wisdom and enthusiasm.”

Mr Somers, vice-principal Tony Davies, chairman of governors Ron Foster and former principal Brian Lippitt will represent the college at Mr Young’s funeral at St John’s parish church, Margate, at 1.30pm on Thursday.
