Traffic chaos as motorway crashes cause gridlock

Sorry, this video asset has been removed.

The collision happened at 8.25am on the southbound A282
just before it becomes the M25, about a quarter of a mile south of
the Darenth Interchange.

Two vehicles were
involved, a white Vauxhall Combi van and a white Volvo 380 tipper
lorry.

The driver of the Vauxhall Combi van, a 51-year-old man from the
Luton, Bedfordshire, area, died at the scene.

The driver of the tipper lorry, a 43-year-old man from the
Slough area, was taken to Darent Valley Hospital where he was
treated for minor injuries.

Police believe the Vauxhall van was travelling southbound in
lane one of the A282 before crossing lanes into the feeder road for
the Darenth Interchange and the A2.

The van smashed into a crash barrier and the Volvo
lorry, which was already in the feeder lane.

PC Rob Malins of the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation
Unit is appealing for witnesses to come forward.

He said: "This collision occurred at the height of the rush-hour
and is likely to have been witnessed by many drivers.

"We would particularly like to hear from the driver of a white
car which was travelling behind the Combi van and would have had a
direct view of the vehicle shortly before the incident.

"There is absolutely no suggestion they were involved in the
collision, but they could have important information that could
help our investigation."

Witnesses and anyone with information can call the Serious
Collision Investigation Unit Appeal Line on 01622 798538.

The feeder road was closed until lunchtime while police
investigated the crash and the vehicles were recovered.

A second person has been taken to hospital
with what are believed to be minor injuries.

The accident came as other Kent motorways were also
gridlocked.

Huge delays built up on the M26 - after the motorway was
partly closed since 8am.

This was after a lorry fire between the junction for the M25/A21
and J2A for the A20 at Wrotham and Borough Green.

Debris on the road from the fruit lorry fire caused
problems - with smoke billowing across the road.

The trailer contents have now been unloaded, and the motorway is
fully reopened.

But it has caused huge tailbacks of five miles elsewhere.

The M25 anticlockwise exit slip road to A21 Southbound was
closed at J5 for the M26/A21 at Sevenoaks, with congestion
tailing back to J6 - or an average 60-minute delay.

That has now also been cleared.

Meanwhile on the M2, one lane was closed earlier due
to debris on the road from an overturned cherry picker.

The stretch on the coastbound carriageway between J3 for
the A229 for Rochester and J4 for the A278 for
Gillingham was affected, but has now been cleared.
