Traders to have their say tonight

Traders in Margate who fear they could go out of business unless more is done to help them will hold a crisis meeting tonight (Monday, September 15).

Reductions to business rates, financial support packages and ways of tackling empty high street shops are among the items being discussed.

Senior Thanet councillors will also talk about the impact of town centre road works on local businesses in the wake of a major improvement scheme which blighted access during the summer.

Tonight’s meeting is expected to discuss recommendations for street cleaning and the maintenance of street furniture in the town centre, as well as regeneration plans for the former Marks and Spencer building, the Dreamland site and the Arlington area.

Labour Cllr Iris Johnston, who represents the Margate Central ward, said: “As an elected member, I hear all the time how traders are struggling to survive.

“We have to be united in whatever action we decide to take and the council must be seen to be listening and helping shopkeepers.

“It’s not just about lowering business rates; it’s about the state of the town in general.

“Anything that encourages people to visit Margate and keeps our town vibrant has got to be a good thing.”

The meeting, which is also open to local residents, takes place at 7pm at the Baptist Church in Cecil Square, Margate
