Thousands of Kent students collect A-level results today

Today thousands of teenagers across Kent will pick up their A-level results.

Many will be nervously hoping they have got the grades they need for their chosen degree course at their first choice of university.

It's been revealed a record number of students have achieved a university place, up 3% on last year - according the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

But for those who didn’t do as well as they hoped, there are still options.

Last year a record 64,300 students found a university place through clearing - a system that puts universities looking for students in touch with school leavers.

After students pick up their results they can start calling universities they are interested in, and most will be able to make them an offer over the phone.

Sophi Marten, the University of Greenwich’s recruitment co-ordinator, has helped hundreds of students find the best courses for them.

She said: “Taking the stress out of clearing is all about being prepared.

“Now is the perfect time to make sure you have the information you need to apply for a clearing place at your fingertips.”

Her top clearing tips include looking for places in your chosen subject before and after students get their results, as UCAS will update its lists, and signing up for fast track clearing services so you are at the front of the queue when results come out.

Students calling universities will need their UCAS ID number, exam results, a personal statement and a list of questions - it's important to make sure the course, and the university, is the right fir for both parties.

Ms Marten added: “Don’t give up. If, at first, a university isn’t interested in your application, or puts you on a reserve list, call back in a few days.

“The situation can change quickly in Clearing and they may reconsider. A second call show that you’re serious about applying.”

Another option for students who didn’t quite make the grade is to look for alternatives.

The University of Greenwich has about 50 extended degree courses which offer students a foundation study year before continuing onto the full course.

Sophi said: “Extended degrees are a great choice if you did not achieve the A-level grades you needed."
