ANYONE keen to find the secret of a long and happy union should have popped along to Aylesford yesterday, when more than 1,000 happy couples attended a mass in celebration of marriage.

The Friars welcomed 1,200 couples celebrating their 10th, 25th, 40th, 50th and even 60th anniversaries.

The event was organised by the Diocese of Southwark, which covers much of Kent and south London.

Every couple invited was a churchgoer celebrating a significant anniversary.

The Prior, Father Francis Kemsley, said: “It’s a celebration of the sacrament of marriage and the stability that being married brings. It certainly was a very happy occasion.”

Bishop John Hine, an auxiliary bishop from the diocese with particular responsibility for Kent presided over mass.

The event was due to have been held at St George’s Cathedral, Southwark, but building work meant it was transferred to Aylesford.

“There was a feeling that because the diocese also covers Kent that more events should be held here,” Father Francis added.
