Supermarket chiefs respond to strike threat

BOSSES at the supermarket chain Morrisons have responded to a decision by workers at its Kent, Cheshire and Avon transport depots to go on strike.

Staff at the Aylesford depot voted yesterday to take action in a bid to save the 1,000 jobs at the site, thought to be at risk as the firm undertakes a review of its distribution network.

Releasing a full statement, the supermarket chain said it would be discussing with both the T&GWU and the GMB the outcome of the ballots.

The statement said: "In talking with the two unions we will consider the interests of our entire distribution workforce and, as always, aim to resolve the issues amicably."

In the statement the firm said members of the T&GWU at some sites had been less supportive of strike action. It went on: "We are awaiting formal notification of the GMB’s ballot result."

The supermarket chain said it would be looking to its remaining 12 depots not affected by industrial action to ensure stores receive goods and customers are able to shop normally.
