A couple have spotted what looks like an image of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in a baby scan.

Mark Smith, 39, and wife Dawn, 36, of Otterden Close, Stanhope, went for a scan of their unborn child at the William Harvey Hospital.

After the scan of the baby, which is due in October, a friend pointed out an outline of what looked like the Conservative leader who governed the country from 1979 to 1990.

Father-of-six Mr Smith said: "We put it on Facebook over the weekend and someone just spotted that it looked a bit like Maggie Thatcher.

"I thought 'Yeah, it does a bit'. It reminded me of that TV programme Spitting Image. It was a bit uncanny."

Despite the likeness, the couple have no intention of naming their child Margaret or Maggie after the Iron Lady, who turns 87 this year.

"Definitely not," said house-husband Mr Smith. "We think it might be a girl, but we're totally anti-Tory."

They intend to call their baby Daisy if it is a girl, or Harry if it is a boy.
