Smoke could be seen for miles after a bonfire got out of control.

Twenty tons of tyres and rubbish were alight in Manor Way, Swanscombe, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said.

Crews were called at 2pm and sent five pumps and the command support unit.

Motorists driving along the A2 reported seeing thick smoke bellowing into the air.

A spokesman said: "Firefighters are tackling a fire affecting approximately 20 tons of tyres.

"Crews are using two hose reel jets and a compressed air foam system to fight the blaze.

"Kent police are also in attendance to carry out road traffic control on the London Road, Swanscombe."

The incident was scaled down at about 4.40pm.
