This was the damage caused when a barge built more than 100 years ago was involved in a collision during an appropriately named annual Kent race.

The 80ft long wooden barge, Marjorie, built in 1901, suffered a 4ft gash and needed emrgency repairs when she collided with steel counterpart Repertor during the Swale Smack and Sailing Barge Match.

Whitstable’s volunteer lifeboat crews went to the aid of the vessel, which had nine people on board.

Helmsman Dave Parry said: "Water was already up to the level of the floor in the former hold."
