Sledgehammers used in supermarket raid bid

Three men used sledgehammers in an unsuccessful attempt to steat a till from a Kent supermarket.

The men wore dark-coloured clothes and kept their faces covered during the incident, which happened at the Tesco store in Riverhead, near Sevenoaks in the early hours of Friday morning.

The trio escaped in a silver Vauxhall Astra driven by a fourth man. The car was found by police a short time later in nearby Mill Road. Noone was hurt.

Det Insp Vicky Withnall said: "This was an unsuccessful attempt but must have been a shock for staff to witness.

"We particularly want to hear from anyone who saw the silver Astra. We want to find out where the men went after they abandoned it."

Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 01732 379217 or Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
