More than 40 sheep and an ostrich have been killed and others have become ill and are not expected to recover after suspected dog attacks.

Maidstone police have issued a warning to farmers after the attacks in the Ulcombe area, which started in late November.

Night time vigils using infrared cameras have been carried out by police in affected areas, to catch the dogs thought to be responsible.

Rural Neighbourhood Inspector Ian Sandwell said: “There have been a number of cases where dogs have been attacking sheep flocks in the Lenham Road, Headcorn Road, Crumps Lane and Stickfast Lane areas of Ulcombe.

"Not only do these incidents cost money to the farmer in replacing the dead sheep, but it also impacts the remainder of the flock who may also die from worry.

"We are doing our utmost to catch either the dog owners responsible or the animals themselves which we believe to be Lurchers or Alsatians, by conducting nightly patrols in affected areas."

Insp Sandwell urged owners to be responsible for the behaviour of thier pets, adding: "If we catch those responsible they could face a fine and even criminal charges."
