Kent suffered heavy snow last year

Tomorrow's Gills game has been called off as Kent shivers - and prepares for snow showers on the way.

The club has been forced to postpone the tie with Hereford because of a frozen pitch.

Referee assessor Paul Alcock made the decision this morning after an inspection found part of the surface already solid despite being covered since Monday.

A new date for the fixture will be announced shortly.

It comes as motorists are warned to be extra cautious after the Met Office issued a severe weather warning.

Much of the county experienced icy conditions this morning, with temperatures falling to as low as -5C overnght.

Snow is due to fall in some places today ahead of more showers over the weekend.

The Met Office has issued a severe cold weather alert - the second-most serious.

Meanwhile, a lantern parade due to take place in Tunbridge Wells to mark Chinese New Year tomorrow has also been called off.

The event, which was due to start at 5.30pm, has been postponed until Saturday, February 11.

Kent Police urged motorists to be cautious, drive slowly and be prepared before starting a journey.

A spokesman said: "If you do have to drive in bad weather, make sure you have enough fuel for your journey and carry warm waterproof clothing, a blanket, spade, food, water and a torch in your vehicle in case you break down or get stuck.

"Poor weather conditions mean it can be harder for drivers to see and it takes longer to stop, so use your lights and keep well back from the car in front.

"It can take twice as long to stop your vehicle when the roads are icy, so slow down. Always apply the brakes gently, and release them and de-clutch if the car skids. "
