Scouting movement continues to progress

IT IS arguably the biggest movement in the world, with millions upon millions of Scouts across the globe all promising to try and do a good turn every day.

More than 50 Scout groups, all donning different colours and woggles, meet in Bexley each week with the opportunity to take part in a range of 200 activities.

And while the movement may be 100-years-old, its popularity is growing faster than ever. The number of Scouts in Greater London South East has almost doubled during the past three years.

County commissioner Diane Roberts said: "There is an activity to suit every individual. Everyone has their own training programme full of activities and awards.

"They are taught independent skills which will stay with them for life. It is often forgotten that a Scout can pick up skills which could help forge a career such as flying, sailing and caving."

Each member embarks on their own programme which is delivered in five sections according to their age.

Mrs Robertson said: "Scouts progress at their own speed. It is designed to cater for every level of learning."

Keen to move with the times, massive changes to the movement have been made in particular in the last seven years.

The county commissioner explained: "There has been a considerable change to Scouting, a change of image, uniform and a comprehensive programme for aged six to 18 is in place."

Beaver Scouts were introduced 21 years ago but still have flurries of young children wanting to join.

Mrs Robertson added: "They are full of life and enthusiasm, they are so eager and suck the life out of you but are a joy to lead."

Having been a leader for 30 years, the county commissioner is now responsible for eight districts and is as busy as ever.

She said: "It’s like having another full-time job but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I would say that Scouting definitely is a life-changing and life-enhancing experience. We will continue to move forward, not back."
