A school held a special assembly and release balloons into the sky this morning in tribute to a 12-year old pupil killed on a skiing trip to Austria a year ago.

Hayden Waller from Wigmore fell 30ft from a cliff after trying to reach out to classmate Roger Whitlow who had slipped.

It cost the Howard School pupil his life The youngster was enjoying his first ever ski holiday a the Alpine resort of Mallnitz in February last year.

An inquest heard how Hayden and three other pupils left their hotel during a period of free time following a day of skiing.

They had tried to get to a nearby mountain hut but as they climbed the terrain became steeper and they decided to turn back.

One of the boys slipped and as he fell Hayden reached out to steady him but lost his footing.

A report from the Health and Safety Executive found the school was not at fault.

Hayden’s memory lives on at the school thanks to a commemorative brass plaque just inside the Howard School gates.

It bears the message 'Hayden Waller: A Valued Pupil’ and is inscribed with the dates he attended the school.

Shortly after Hayden’s death head teacher Paul Morris announced that the school would no longer organise its annual school trip to the ski resort where pupils and staff had been visiting for 25 years.

Earlier this month the school held a football tournament in Hayden's honour with a special assembly planned once pupils return from the half term break.
