A lightning strike during storms on Thursday night destroyed part of a Medway school.

Flames ripped through an outside classroom at St Thomas More Catholic Primary, Walderslade.

Fire crews from Medway were called to the scene shortly before 7pm following reports of smoke billowing from the school roof.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "It was quite alight when we got there.

"By the time we got inside the building was full of smoke. Part of the roof had to come in because it was so damaged."

A school spokesman said surveyors were now on site surveying the damage, which is said to be "significant."

She said: "The Pavilion at St Thomas More was struck by lightning, causing significant damage.

"It is a separate timber building used for the breakfast club, drama and music and after school clubs.

"There was no one at the school at the time of the incident.

"The good news is that it doesn't affect the running of the school, which will be open on Monday for the start of the new school term.
