Salmonella outbreak warning in east Kent

Listen to Dr Mathi Chandrakumar about the salmonella

Six children in east Kent have fallen ill with an unusual strain of salmonella.

The Kent Health Protection Unit says laboratory tests have confirmed the cases and a further eight suspected cases are being investigated.

Parents in Canterbury and Dover, where the bug has been identified, are being asked not to worry about the outbreak but to be aware of it and take extra care to ensure children wash their hands before eating.

The unit has advised three nurseries and a primary school to carry out thorough deep cleaning and letters have been sent to parents and GPs.

Unit Director Dr Mathi Chandrakumar said all the children are recovering well from the bug which can cause food poisoning with symptoms including stomach cramps, diarrheoa and vomiting.
