Early mornings, lycra and hard work have all been part of the training regime for a group of students hoping to stroke their way to victory.

Crews from the universities of Greenwich, Kent, and Canterbury Christchurch, have been improving their rowing speed and skills in preparation for the race on Saturday, May 3.

The competition involves tackling a 2.6km course from Cuxton to the Esplanade, Rochester. The fun begins at 12.30pm.

Phil Hull, a Business Studies undergraduate at the university of Kent, rowed in last year’s winning crew.

This time he is their captain and is determined to build on last year’s success.

He said:“We’ve had a great time and made lots of progress, thanks to excellent coaching from the club.

"It’s been a tremendous experience. There’s nothing like being out on the river.

"This boat race will be even more competitive than the first one; a real class event.”
