The body of a young soldier from Folkestone killed in Afghanistan has been repatriated to the UK a week after his death.

A C17 aircraft arrived at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire on Friday carrying Rifleman Peter Aldridge, 19.

His Union Jack-draped coffin was carried from the plane to a waiting hearse by fellow riflemen before a sombre procession through the nearby town of Wootton Bassett.

Rfn Aldridge, whose family moved to Folkestone about two years ago from Croydon, was killed in an explosion near Sangin in Helmand Province on Friday, January 22.

He was on a foot patrol, part of a larger operation providing security for the local population.

Rfn Aldridge was a member of 4th Battalion, The Rifles, and was on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan.

He has a younger brother, Matthew, who goes to Pent Valley Technology College.

In a statement, his family said he had "died a hero....doing what he believed in."
