School children came face to face with police dogs - all in a good cause.

One dog in training and two puppies were taken to St Alphege Infants as a special treat to reward the pupils for their community spirit.

It followed their work with the Whitstable Police and Community Together (PACT) group, aimed at tackling local issues, to create a poster campaign to promote the 20mph zone in the area.

The project was runner-up in a competition run by Kent Police to recognise good examples of police working alongside partners to tackle a PACT priority problem.

PC Andy Camp won £500 on behalf of Whitstable Neighbourhood Team to be spent on initiatives tackling PACT priorities.

To thank the children for their work, PC Camp visited the school along with Sgt Dave Brenchley and Kent County Cllr Mike Harrison, to present them with a special certificate.

The children were more excited, however, by the police dogs which were brought in for them to pet.

Headteacher Sue Evans said: “They brought in one police dog in training and two puppies, and all the children got a pat.

“It was absolutely delightful.”
