Probe after worker is crushed to death

AN INVESTIGATION is underway after a man was crushed to death while he was at work.

Paramedics and police officers were called to Nordic Recycling in Chatham Docks on Friday at about 3.30pm.

It is believed the victim, who was in his late 50s, was crushed by a tonne of paper which was being prepared for shipping abroad.

But details of what exactly happened, and the identity of the dead man, are being withheld until his next of kin have been informed.

Nordic Recycling has a huge depot at the docks which transports waste paper to Scandinavia for recycling.

Officers from Kent Police are investigating along with officials from the Health and Safety Executive. The death of the man is not being treated as suspicious.

A Kent police spokesman said: "We are investigating the accident and we have recovered a fork lift truck that was involved. It is subject to an ongoing inquiry and we will take it from there."
