DETECTIVES today renewed their appeal for information about a raid at a village post office (Amanda Wills writes).

Robbers who entered Chilham post office, near Canterbury, found the tables turned when the postmaster Peter Wead, his wife Aileen, and customers tackled them.

Mr Wead was left with cuts and brusing to his face, leg and arm. His wife's arms were also bruised.

Despite their efforts the two raiders, who had an accomplice on watch outside, managed to get away with an undisclosed amount of cash in the robbery, which happened at about 2.30pm on Monday.

The two men inside the shop were both Afro Caribbean. One, wearing a baseball cap, was aged between 20 and 23, 5ft 8in, of thin build and was clean shaven with auburn hair.

The second was aged between 18 and 20, 5ft 7in, of stocky build, with short back curly hair. He was also clean shaven and was wearing a yellow fleece jacket, possibly with a hood. Police have no description of the third man.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact DS Joe Bushell at Ashford police station on 01233 619186 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
