Police ranked among the top for gay-friendly employers

Kent Police has been recognised as one of the most gay-friendly employers in Britain.

The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2009 ranked the force as fourth, leaping 22 places from last year.

It was said to have demonstrated a proactive lesbian, gay and bisexual support network, which meets regularly with the Chief Constable and other chief officers to discuss relevant issues.

The group also helps with recruitment and retention and is on hand to provide specialised knowledge in specific areas of policing, the report said.

Chief Constable Mike Fuller said: "I am proud of the ranking we have achieved in the 2009 Index.

"In recent years the police service has made significant strides to embrace and progress equality and diversity in the workplace."

Lloyds TSB was ranked first in the UK, followed by Hampshire Constabulary and Brighton & Hove Council.
